Emmanuel Di Rossetti’s travel diary

Blanc de Saint Bonnet on contemporary France

In 1851, Blanc de Saint Bonnet said:

When men lose sight of moral necessities, God brings forth the light of necessities of another order. If faith is no longer received by the ear, it will be taught to us by hunger. Christianity will constitute modern society, or we will see it shatter. Economic realities will soon lay bare the truths. Your laws will have recognized everything, consecrated everything, and administered everything; all human means will be employed: never a larger army, never more comprehensive legislation, never a more powerful administration; then, having exhausted secondary causes, you will come crashing against the primary cause! It will no longer be the unrecognized doctrine that is heard, it will no longer be the unheard conscience that cries out. Facts will speak their great voice. Truth will leave the heights of words; it will enter into the bread we eat, into the blood by which we live; light will be fire. Men will find themselves between truth and death… will they have the wisdom to choose?
