An extraordinary passage from Blessed Cardinal Newman :
By sinning, by suffering, by correcting ourselves, by improving ourselves, we advance toward truth through the experience of error; we achieve success through failure. We do not know how to act rightly except after having acted wrongly. […] We know what is right not in a positive but a negative way; we do not see the truth all at once and steer ourselves toward it, but we throw ourselves into error to experience it, and we discover that it is not the truth. […] Such is the mechanism by which we achieve success; we walk toward heaven backward; we aim our arrows at a target and think that the one who misses the fewest is truly skillful.
