Pentecostal Happiness

One of the joys of the Pentecost octave lies in the recitation of the Veni, Sancte Spiritus , after the recitation of the Victimae Paschali during Easter week; the liturgy never ceases to amaze us.

Come, Holy Spirit,

And send down from the sky

A ray of your light.

Come, father of the poor,

Come, giver of gifts,

Come, light of hearts.

A very good comforter

Gentle host of the soul,

Gentle refreshment.

Rest from work,

Relief during the heatwave,

Consolation in tears.

O blessed light,

Fill to the very core

The hearts of your faithful.

Without your divine help,

There is nothing in man,

Nothing is innocent.

Wash what is soiled,

Water what is arid,

Heal what is wounded.

Soften what is stiff,

Warm up what is cold,

Correct what is distorted.

Give to your faithful

Those who trust in you,

The seven sacred gifts.

Give credit where credit is due for virtue

Give the final salute

Give eternal joy.

So be it. Hallelujah.
